Hyundai Motor recalls about 50,000 vehicles in the U.S. over airbag hazards

Recently, we learned from relevant channels that Hyundai Motor will recall 49,719 gasoline and hybrid mid-size crossovers in the United States because a problem with the vehicle's main floor wiring harness may cause airbags to malfunction when deployed. The recall involves some 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe and hydrogen-powered Santa Fe models.

It is understood that the specific reason for this recall is that the electrical system may rub against the passenger-side second-row seat assembly and be damaged. Hyundai's filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that this could trigger the airbag warning light and cause the airbags to deploy unexpectedly or not deploy at all in the event of an accident. In addition, Hyundai also said that airbag deployment failure may increase the risk of injury to people in the vehicle, but "in the United States and Canada, the company has not received confirmed reports of crashes or injuries related to this."

Hyundai said owners should take their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for inspection. Dealers will secure the wiring harness with a new clamp to prevent interference with the seat folding mechanism. If the wiring harness is damaged, the dealer will replace it free of charge for the owner.
